  {"id":3737,"date":"2020-05-25T15:24:35","date_gmt":"2020-05-25T19:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cpbao.ca\/?post_type=cporsc_resources&#038;p=3737"},"modified":"2025-11-25T16:34:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T20:34:24","slug":"cpd-program-description","status":"publish","type":"cporsc_resources","link":"https:\/\/cpbao.ca\/fr\/cpo_resources\/cpd-program-description\/","title":{"rendered":"Continuing Professional Development &#8211; Exigences du programme"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Program Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program is designed to assist registrants in maintaining their professional competence by continuously enhancing their knowledge and experience. The requirements of the program are also designed to reduce professional isolation as this has been identified as a source of risk with respect to professional competence (<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.ymaws.com\/www.asppb.net\/resource\/resmgr\/guidelines\/revised_guidelines_for_cpd_2.pdf\">ASPPB<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MINIMUM PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>College registrants must ensure the following requirements are met throughout each two-year cycle of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program. The minimum requirements apply equally to practitioners of psychology and applied behaviour analysis and are not intended to discourage participation beyond the minimum requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Overall<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>During each two-year CPD cycle, a minimum of 50 overall hours of continuing education and professional development activities shall be undertaken to maintain and develop knowledge and skills relevant to a registrant\u2019s practice authorizations. Activities completed will pertain to professional jurisprudence, legislation, standards and ethics; equity, diversity and inclusion, and supervision (should a registrant provide supervisory services).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hours<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To satisfy this overall requirement, the 50 hours completed must include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-roman\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At least 15 hours of Section A: Professional Interaction and Interdisciplinary Activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: initial;\">At least 15 hours of Section B: Continuing Education, Professional Training and Self-Directed Learning Activities<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Registrants may, but are not required to, earn additional hours from Section C: Additional Professional Development Activities<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, credits or CEUs are equivalent to hours (1:1). Behaviour Analysts completing the BACB continuing education requirements, which typically equate 50 minutes of activity to 1 CEU, are permitted to count 1 CEU as 1 CPD hour, as the College allows for brief exchanges of knowledge, relevant discussion, and Q&amp;A participation during an event to be included in activity hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Content<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To satisfy the overall requirement, the 50 hours completed must include activities with content related to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-roman\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ethics and Jurisprudence (Ethics)<\/strong>:  At least 10 hours of activity content pertaining to legislation, standards or ethical conduct.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI):<\/strong>  At least 5 hours of activity content pertaining to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion to avoid practices that may unfairly discriminate against or would be experienced as oppressive by some individuals or groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supervision:<\/strong>   At least 3 hours of activity content pertaining to supervisory practices (only applicable for those registrants which provide supervision to other health professionals, Supervised Practice registrants of the College, or students).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Content requirements may be completed through activities from Sections A, B and\/or C. One activity may earn credit in multiple content categories (e.g., Ethics and Supervision) based upon the subject matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Activity Maximums<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>No more than 10 hours per single event or per activity type may be applied towards your completion of the overall requirements. These maximums have been put in place to ensure registrants are participating in a variety of learning mediums to maintain their professional knowledge and skills. However, there is no maximum to the number of hours which registrants can apply from activities completed under Sections A, B, or C towards their fulfilment of the overall program requirement once the Section A and B minimums are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Single Event:<\/strong> &nbsp;Refers to engagement in a unique educational activity in which new knowledge or skill is acquired. Up to 10 hours per single event may be applied towards the program requirements. (e.g., individual programs, courses, workshops, topic-specific structured professional development meetings, invited speaker sessions, self-directed professional readings).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Activity Type:<\/strong> Refers to a recurring professional activity. Up to 10 hours from all occurrences of an activity type may be applied towards the program requirements. (e.g., providing and\/or receiving supervision, providing and\/or receiving consultation, client outcome monitoring).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-roman\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Single Event: I<\/em><em>f you have completed a 12-hour continuing education course, you may count up to 10 hours from that course towards the fulfillment of the overall program requirement. Completion of another activity or event which involved direct peer engagement and enhanced the registrant\u2019s professional practise of psychology or applied behaviour analysis may be counted. Registrants must be able to describe the benefit of any completed CPD activities towards the maintenance of their professional competency, if requested by the College.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td rowspan=\"7\"><strong>Section B<\/strong> <strong>Min. 15 hrs<\/strong> &nbsp;<br><br><br><br><br><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Continuing Education, Professional Training and Self-Directed Learning Activities<\/strong><br>Independently completed activities for the maintenance of professional knowledge related to the practice of Psychology and\/or ABA.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Example Activities:<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Professional development programs, training courses, workshops or seminars <u>(with or without peer interaction)<\/u><br><\/strong>Typically includes a specified agenda, curriculum or learning outcome, with or without formal CE credits. In-person or on-line completion. <strong><em>Programming which was completed independently and did not involve peer interaction or knowledge sharing may only be recorded once, under Section B.<\/em><\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Reading professional literature<br><\/strong>E.g., journal articles, books, manuals for new tests or assessment tools, etc.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Reviewing new or amended jurisprudence<br><\/strong>E.g., professionally relevant Legislation, Standards, Ethical Codes, etc.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Viewing professionally relevant talks, podcasts or other media content<br><\/strong>Independent viewing of live or archived professional media.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>This is not an exhaustive list of continuing education and training activities which registrants may complete. Completion of another activity or event which involved knowledge development and enhanced the registrant\u2019s professional practise of psychology or applied behaviour analysis may be counted. Registrants must be able to describe the benefit of any completed CPD activities towards the maintenance of their professional competency, if requested by the College.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td rowspan=\"11\"><strong>Section C<\/strong> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<br><br><br><br><br><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Additional Professional Development Activities<\/strong><br>Activities which facilitate engagement in a variety of professional development mediums relevant to individual practice expereinces, areas and settings. <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Example Activities:<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Preparation for: <strong>Delivering workshops, conferences, presentations, and professional dissemination<\/strong><br><em>Note:<\/em><\/strong><em> only preparation time is considered applicable for these, or similar activities, as the delivery or dissemination of information is typically intended to enhance the knowledge or skills of the recipients. See \u201cPreparation for: Teaching or training\u201d for dissemination to parents\/caregivers.<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Preparation for: Teaching or training<br><\/strong>Developing or updating materials with new information to instruct or guest lecture in a university or community college level course or practicum, supervising student research, leading an organizational event or presentation, or training staff within an organization, such as a school, care facility, or correctional setting.<br><strong><em>Note:<\/em><\/strong><em> excludes dissemination to client parents or caregivers on ABA interventions, as this constitutes service delivery, which is not applicable for CPD hours. See \u201cProviding formal supervision for training, educating and monitoring through supervision\u201d.<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><strong>Professional writing, reviewing and editing<\/strong><br><\/strong>E.g., scientific papers, book or book chapters, journal articles, decision letters for peer reviewed articles, content for popular media related to professional topics.&nbsp;<br><strong><em>Note:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>excludes activities such as, but not limited to, writing, reviewing and editing, which would otherwise be required during the course of client service provision (e.g., clinical reports or parent\/ caregiver training materials). Related activities conducted in the provision of client services may be not counted.<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Formal research<br><\/strong>Designing, conducting, collecting or analyzing research data for your own or others\u2019 professional projects.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Structured client outcome monitoring<br><\/strong>Administering structured client outcome measures and using the information to plan further intervention.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Professional Leadership<br><\/strong>E.g., acting member of a professionally relevant committee, board, association or working group. Completion of another activity or event which was relevant to the development of one\u2019s competence for the professional practise of psychology or applied behaviour analysis may be counted. Registrants must be able to describe the benefit of any completed CPD activities towards the maintenance of their professional competency, if requested by the College.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><strong>Double Credit<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Registrants will note that&nbsp;<strong>professional development programs, courses, workshops or seminars&nbsp;<\/strong>are listed as applicable activities under both Section A<em>: Professional Interaction and Interdisciplinary Activities&nbsp;<\/em>and Section B:&nbsp;<em>Continuing Education, Professional Training and Self-Directed Learning. <\/em>When these activities are completed independently, the CPD hours may only be categorized under Section B. However, if the activity involved group attendance and\/or peer interaction, the hours can be counted under&nbsp;<strong>both<\/strong>&nbsp;Sections A and B.<a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-37370\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Previous CPD Program Requirements (Cycles beginning before July 1, 2024)<\/h2><div id=\"ac-37370\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Previous CPD Program Requirements (Cycles beginning before July 1, 2024<\/strong><br>Registrants included in the July 1, 2023 \u2013 June 30, 2025 CPD Program cycle may continue to observe the below requirements which were in effect at the start of their two-year period, if they wish. They may also choose to observe the current CPD program requirements above, which will be applicable for all cycles beginning on or after July 1, 2024.<br>\u00a0<br>The requirements set out below refer to the minimum number of credits members are required to obtain over a two-year cycle. Maximums noted below refer only to the maximum number of credits one may use from each section to satisfy the overall requirements of the program. It is believed that most members will likely exceed the minimum requirements of the CPD program, and these requirements are not meant to discourage additional participation.<br><strong>EXPECTATIONS<\/strong><br>1. Continuing Professional Development shall be undertaken from a combination of activities in Section A \u2013 Professional Activities and Section B \u2013 Continuing Education Activities (see chart below). Any single activity may be used to fulfill only one of the minimum Continuing Professional Development requirements in either Section A or Section B and only to the maximums noted, per two-year cycle.<br><br>2. A member shall obtain at least 50 credits of Continuing Professional Development every two years. In many cases, credits are equivalent to hours however there are some categories of Continuing Professional Development that are not \u201chourly\u201d.<br><br>3. In accumulating the required 50 credits of Continuing Professional Development every two years a member shall undertake a minimum of 10 credits from Section A \u2013 Professional Activities and a minimum of 10 credits from Section B \u2013 Continuing Education Activities. (See chart below.)<br><br>4. To ensure maintenance of knowledge related to jurisprudence, a minimum of 10 credits of Continuing Professional Development activities undertaken shall pertain to legislation, professional standards and ethics related to the profession. These may be from either Section A or Section B or a combination of these.<br><br>5. To avoid practices that may unfairly discriminate against, or would be experienced as oppressive by some individuals or groups, members must also ensure that a minimum of five credits address Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. These may be from either Section A or Section B or a combination of these.<br><br><strong>SECTION A \u2013 PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES<\/strong><br><strong>(MINIMUM 10 CREDITS)<br>Members may record a maximum of 20 credits per category (A1, A2, A3\u2026) with no more than 10 credits per single event or activity.<\/strong><br><br><strong>A1 \u2013 Professional Consultation \/Interaction (1 hour = 1 credit)<\/strong><br><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Colloquia, attending invited speaker sessions, professional development meetings<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Case conferences<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Grand Rounds<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Journal discussions with professional peers<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Professional Listserv participation<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Providing or receiving supervision or consultation<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Subject of Peer Assisted Review (Voluntary or Required)<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Mentorship or shadowing<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Other similar activities that would enhance your professional practice with clients.<\/strong><br><strong>May be undertaken in-person or via technology.<\/strong><br><br><strong>A2 \u2014 (Preparation for) Teaching: (1 hour = 1 Credit, or 10 credits per semester course)<\/strong><br><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Preparing materials for teaching a university or community college course or guest lecture<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Preparing a practicum course<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Supervising student research<\/strong><br><br><strong>A3 \u2014 (Preparation for) Delivering Workshops, Conferences and Presentations: (1 hour = 1 credit)<\/strong><br><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Developing materials for workshops, seminars, or other courses<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Other similar activities<\/strong><br><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br><strong>A4 \u2014 Professional Writing, Reviewing, and Editing: (1 hour = 1 credit)<\/strong><br><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Professional or scientific paper<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Book, chapter, journal relevant to psychology<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Professional e\u2010 writing, (blogs, website posts)<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Popular media where content is related to professional matters<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Other similar activities<\/strong><br><strong>Excludes reports and documentation prepared in the course of providing client care.<\/strong><br><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br><strong>A5 \u2014 Formal Research: (1 hour = 1 credit)<\/strong><br><strong>Examples: Designing, implementing, collecting and analyzing research data<\/strong><br><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br><strong>A6 \u2014 College\/Association Involvement: (1 hour= 1 credit)<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Serving on the College Board of Directors or Committee or Psychological Association Board or Committee<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Serving as an Oral Examiner or Quality Assurance Committee Peer Assessor or Reviewer<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Participation in College consultations<\/strong><br><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br><strong>A7 \u2014 Practice Outcome Monitoring: (1 hour = 1 credit)<\/strong><br><strong>Examples: Assessing individual or group client outcomes using questionnaires or other formal outcome measures<\/strong><br><br><strong>A8 \u2014 General Attendance at Conferences, Workshops, Seminars and Conventions: (1\/2 day = 1 credit)<\/strong><br><strong>Examples: Live events with educational content associated with the profession, examples listed in B1, below<\/strong><br><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br><strong>When participating in applicable live activities with other participants or professional peers, credits may be counted under both A8 and B1 or B2 categories.<\/strong><br><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br><strong>SECTION B \u2013 CONTINUING EDUCATION ACTIVITIES<\/strong><br><strong>(MINIMUM 10 CREDITS)<\/strong><br><strong>Members may record a maximum of 20 credits per category (B1, B2, B3)\u00a0 with no more than 10 credits per single event or activity.<\/strong><br><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br><strong>B1 \u2014 Programs\/Courses\/Workshops with content relevant to the practice of Psychology where formal CE credits are provided: (1 hour = 1 credit, or as provided by the accrediting organization)<\/strong><br><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Professionally relevant workshops, seminars, sessions<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Professionally relevant programs, workshops or courses offered at an educational institute or professional or scientific meeting<\/strong><br><strong>\u2022 Any structured program relevant to the practice of psychology would be acceptable<\/strong><br><strong>CPO does not pre\u2010approve or endorse any specific CE programs; generally, appropriate CPD activities will have a structured agenda, learning objectives, attendance (either on\u2010site or online) and a specified number of required hours of attendance.
