Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Regulation in Ontario

Planning to practice as a Behaviour Analyst in Ontario? You must register with 91视频 using one of the current registration routes: Transitional Route 1, Transitional Route 2, or the Entry Level Route (Supervised Practice).

Transitional Routes 1 and 2 will close on June 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m.

As of July 1, 2024, the Psychology and Applied Behaviour Analysis Act, 2021 is in force. Anyone using or wishing to use the protected title of 鈥Behaviour Analyst鈥 or 鈥淩.B.A. (Ont.)鈥 in Ontario must be registered with the 91视频.

Apply:

NOTE: Psychologists and Psychological Associates who are 91视频 registrants will access the application portal via their existing member account: .

See below for more information about registration requirements and available pathways.

If you鈥檙e a practitioner in the field of applied behaviour analysis, therapy, or intervention, you may be required to register. Use the Self-Screening Tool to determine whether you need to apply.

Effective July 1, 2024, there are two Certificates of Registration for Behaviour Analysts in Ontario:

  1.  Certificate of Registration for a Behaviour Analyst Authorizing Autonomous Practice.
  2.  Certificate of Registration for a Behaviour Analyst Authorizing Supervised Practice.

91视频 has developed registration requirements to ensure that all Behaviour Analysts in Ontario 鈥 both new graduates entering practice and experienced practitioners 鈥攈ave the necessary qualifications and competencies needed to provide safe, effective, and quality care to the Ontario public.

During the transition period (until June 30, 2026), there are three routes to registration:

Transitional Route #1 鈥 BCBA / BCBA-D:

For individuals who:

  • Hold active BCBA or BCBA-D Certification with the BCBA
  • Are in good standing

Those who meet these requirements will qualify for a Certificate of Registration for a Behaviour Analyst Authorizing Autonomous Practice once they successfully complete a Jurisprudence Module.

Transitional Route #2: Non-BCBA/BCBA-D

For individuals who:

  • Have been working competently within the Scope of Practice of ABA
  • Can demonstrate at least 1500 hours of current practice within the past 4 years

Those who meet these requirements will qualify for a Certificate of Registration for a Behaviour Analyst Authorizing Autonomous Practice once they have successfully completed the Ontario Examination for Professional Practice in Applied Behaviour Analysis (OEPPABA), and the Jurisprudence and Ethics Course and Assessment in ABA.

Entry Level Route:

Individuals who don鈥檛 meet the criteria in Transitional Routes 1 & 2 may apply through the Entry Level Route and will be issued a Certificate of Registration for a Behaviour Analyst Authorizing Supervised Practice once they meet all registration requirements.

The OEPPABA is 91视频鈥檚 professional examination for Behaviour Analysts in Ontario. It was developed specifically for this regulation to assess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of Behaviour Analysts at entry-level and throughout their career.

The exam is based on a competency profile and blueprint created by ABA professionals. The blueprint provides information to candidates about the weighting of each domain on the examination.

See more information on the Competency Profile and Examination Blueprint.

The title 鈥淏ehaviour Analyst鈥 is now protected in Ontario and may only be used by 91视频 registrants who are registered as Behaviour Analysts.

Unregulated practitioners cannot use this title, imply any certification or designation, or suggest they are qualified to practice as a Behaviour Analyst.

If you have concerns about an unregulated practitioner, you may contact the employer of that individual, seek legal advice, or contact 91视频. We will investigate and take appropriate steps to address this.
